Celebrate 30 Years With Us
We are celebrating 30 years of creating Arctic-based businesses and employment opportunities with the launch of our new and improved website! Because we want to bring more opportunities for the Kitikmeot Inuit of Nunavut, now is the right time to reintroduce ourselves to those looking to do business in the Arctic with an updated brand and web presence!
Our website contains updated information on who we are, what we do, and how we can do business together.
Our Story
The 30-year story of Kitikmeot Corporation’s development and growth is one of overcoming the significant challenges for developing business in the Kitikmeot region of Nunavut. At Kitikmeot Corporation (KC), we guide our partner businesses towards new opportunities by supporting them with the financial, community, human, and knowledge-based resources required for successful work within the region.
KC’s predecessor, Nangipakvik Development Corporation, was created in 1990 in anticipation of the royal assent of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement and as a subsidiary of the Kitikmeot Inuit Association. The corporation was established as a vehicle for Inuit to take on new business opportunities resulting from the Nunavut Agreement’s implementation.
The 1991 purchase of a house served as our first investment. Things began to move in 1996 when the establishment of the Territory of Nunavut created the need for office space and housing for the new territorial government and its employees. At the same time, the rapidly developing diamond mining industry in the Northwest Territories created new opportunities for civil works and businesses to support the Arctic resource industry. KC was well placed to help facilitate the growth of these new opportunities.
From those early years in helping grow the Arctic’s property development and resource sectors, KC continued to expand its investments in real estate and other new companies participating in different sectors relevant to the North. KC also participated in the operation and maintenance of the North Warning System in partnership with its sister Inuit development corporations across the Canadian Arctic.
Connecting You North
Today, we have over twenty-five companies successfully conducting business in the Kitikmeot Region and generating benefits for the local Inuit. We continue to grow in what remains to be a geographically remote business environment with unique infrastructure and logistics challenges. What’s also remarkable is that this growth has been largely carried out by a small team – throughout its history, KC has never had more than ten employees working directly for it at any one time!
